Return of Listen Again links - sort of.
« on: April 18, 2015, 12:37:05 AM »
Hello,

The Beebotron \'Listen Again\' UK links (currently called \"BBC Listen Again - UK only WMA Links - NOT Available\") are now providing URLs which open the requested programme in the iPlayer \'pop-out\' player.

In other words, whereas before you\'d have used those pages to find the programme you wanted, and clicked it to download a wma file, clicking it now opens the iPlayer at the programme you want, and starts playing it.

Could International users try this even though its currently flagged as \'UK only\', and post here to tell me if it works for them.

I know this isn\'t the best solution for dial-up users, who would probablly still prefer to directly download a file. But hopefully it helps to at least avoid having to navigate the iPlayer site to find the content you want.

Hi Rick, fantabulous!
Having some ISP issues this side of channel, and what with amazing weather and stuff to do I\'ve not listened as much as usual.
Just tried the UK wma listen again links designated and THEY WORK, well for 4x at any rate. Will test all the other stations tomorrow evening when I\'ve a bit of time, if that\'s agreeable to you.

May I pick your brain briefly as I\'m having the devil of a job listening to the BBC. I wonder what ideal download speeds are. My ISP is currently affording :

Time : 00.20
Server : Amsterdam 2 NL
Ping : 154 ms
Download speed BBC test : 0.53 Mb/s
Upload speed test : 5.76

Time :00.40
Server : Amsterdam 2 NL
Ping : 113 ms
DS = 0.35mb/s
US = 5mb/s

Time :00.44
Server Amsterdam 2 NL
Ping 76 ms
DS = 0.6 mb/s
US = 5.52 mb/s

Why all the fluctuations?
I\'ve had to resort to my downstairs neighbour ISP swap deal, a system in place for both of us when our individual ISPs are \"down\". It seems all my bbc streaming problems could be provider generated and not the fault of the BBC.

Thanks for unleashing your creative forces to provide valid alternative Beebotron links.(tu)

Those download speeds (0.5, 0.35, 0.6) are pretty atrocious. I think streaming from *any* service would struggle with those speeds - they are comparable to dial-up speeds.

I live rurally and get about 1.5 on average. This is fine for streaming audio as long as my wife doesn\'t swamp the line with Facebook nonsense. But really my speed is a one-job-at-a-time sort of connection. On the other hand, my sister gets around 100mb/s and everyone in the house can stream at the same time while someones downloading HD films and doing skype and gaming online, without an issue. How the other half live, eh? @\'.2\'@

On the other, other hand, this is a few minutes walk from my front door:

...so i think all in all, I\'m still better off:)-D

I would be happy to check to see if it works here in the US but I am not sure where on this site I need to go to in order to find the links.  :S

They are on the second section of the Beebotron Lite page. The sections name begins \'BBC Listen Again\'. If you click a section you\'ll see a list of stations, click a station and you\'ll get a list of all the programmes available from that station.

There is a section called BBC Listen Again International Links - this sections still producing the old style links which don\'t work, so don\'t test them, they\'ll all fail! I\'ll be retitling the sections to be clearer when we have a good idea of what works and what doesn\'t.

Re request for link tests from Beebotron users overseas ...

From Brussels all stations are GO (except for \"local\" ones) and that goes for the entire list down to Genres.
Nice work Rick!

Question please : when BBC streams are down, will these new Beebotron links save the day as wma links have done in the past, or is that a loaded question?

As per usual, \"thanks for all the fish ... \"

Hi Rick, Thanks for all your efforts - the new Listen Again links are working fine for me in Canada and are much easier to navigate than the Beeb\'s iplayer/Radio programme listings and schedules. The only drawback is that they still require Flashplayer to work, so not usable on my Flash-challenged devices.
Great work - Beebotron lives on to fight another day (which is more than I can say for my internet radio!)

Forgot to mention the browser I used was the latest Firefox and that the OS was/is Windows 7.
Tomorrow I\'ll try the lot again using Chrome.

Hi Linksys,

That area of the site is the What Was On section, which is generated slightly differently from the rest of the site, and currently (as you saw) doesn\'t work.

The new links can be found by starting from the Beebotron Lite page, which is here:

Okay, I\'m a total dork. I can\'t find where the links are, Rick. I\'ve been sick, so bear with me.

I went to Beebotron Lite/BBC Listen Again - UK only WMA Links - NOT Available/Radio 4 FM Listen Again....but I\'m not showing anything in the list. Where did I go wrong?

Lovely picture, by the way. :)
