RIP Tom Sharpe
« on: June 06, 2013, 08:22:24 PM »
Goodbye Mr Tom, one of my favourite comedy authors; \"Blott on the Landscape\" (the first of his I read) \"Porterhouse Blue\" \"Ancestral Vices\" and the \"Wilt\" series. He had a good innings - 85 - but I still feel sad.

I\'ve not heard of him, Teepee. Did they do any of his stuff on radio that I might have heard?

There was an adaptation of \"Porterhouse Blue\" way back in 2000 - and I don\'t know if its been repeated on 7 .....whoops...4Xtra (funny how old habits die hard!).

There was also a version \"The Great Pursuit\" broadcast in 2005 - and again I don\'t know of any repeats - perhaps I should have a gander at PAWs radio page.

Although I have read and enjoyed both novels I have not heard either of the radio versions, although I did see the TV adaptation of the former and thought it quite well done.

I don\'t know whether you would particularly enjoy them Jan.....I think they\'re maybe a tad too typical \"Brit-twit\"  for an overseas audience.

Yes radio versions would be great.
Read \'em all though can\'t for the life of me recall which one begins with the dumping of the main protagonist\'s wife (or was it an inflatable sex toy) for burial on a busy building site.

The abiding memory is of the acute STITCH in the side I suffered from laughing, crying and gasping at the screeching irreverence of it all. If hyper-cynicism doesn\'t float your boat Jan, then maybe this ain\'t for you. I\'d give one of \'em a try at least though.

Blott perhaps. Beware of spoilers in the link below in case you intend to read it.

I enjoyed the TV version of PB, but I could watch David Jason reading the Telephone Directory! As you said PB was recorded in 2000. It was a nine-part reading by the immaculate Anton Lesser. It was last repeated, on BBC7 in September 2005.

Of course that was David Suchet in his pre-Poirot days.

That prospect is always hit and miss...but I wouldn\'t mind hearing one to find out. :)

Perhaps we should request some repeats?

Not sure any radio productions exist.

It was the latter Truthy....and the book was \"Wilt\".
