\"Strangers & Brothers\" - C. P. Snow.
« on: February 20, 2013, 01:27:19 AM »
Does anyone recognise the music used for \"Strangers & Brothers\" - C. P. Snow on R4x?

I think it\'s really lovely...

As a totally uninteresting \"aside,\" I went to the same school as C.P. Snow...

erm...about a 100 years apart tho\'
hmm...

Best Wishes All,

V.

Hello Vesalius - have just had a listen to the music and I can\'t say I know it for sure, but it sounds a lot like one of Edward Elgars \"Enigma Variations\".
I\'m NOT paranoid......thats just what THEY want you to think!!!

(Still not an answer to the original question, sorry. I\'ll get me c...)

I just want to say that I laughed out loud when listening to The New Men (Monday\'s episode), at the point where Lewis Eliot offers someone an OBE as a reward for not pursuing an affair with his sister-in-law! They were right in The Goon Show and I\'m Sorry, I\'ll Read That Again! (OBE? No, I\'m trying to give them up.)

Generally, this series is awfully pompous and stuffy, as I rather expected it would be (especially as I had already listened to one or two episodes, some time ago), but I seem to be hooked on listening to it. I suppose this is because of mild curiosity as to where it will all lead, over a period of decades - not that I really care about anyone in it, least of all the central, er, character.

P.S. Tim McInnerny alert! (He plays Lewis\'s brother in this.) :)

I must admit, this episode was better than the others so far, because of the very real drama of the wartime effort to develop nuclear weapons. There was a striking comparison to Galileo moulding the hot soft glass of his lenses using his hands, which could be smelled burning!

I finally got a response (answer isn\'t the word that\'s for sure!)...behold:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmeshttp://www.bbc.co.uk/messageboards

Of particular relevance, the BBC Points of View Messageboard has a dedicated thread for queries about music featured in BBC programmes at:
 http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/mbpointsofview/NF1951566?thread=8324930

There is further information available on the site explaining how to post a question.

Many BBC radio programmes and some TV programmes have their own blogs on the BBC Blogs Network which is often a good way of finding out additional information. The full list of BBC Blogs can be found online at:
 http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs

The BBC is committed to ensuring that as much of the Licence Fee as possible is spent on making programmes. In order to provide best value to our audiences we cannot always undertake to research individual answers to the many unique enquiries we receive each week.

However, please be assured that we log details of all enquiries we receive on our database, and we regularly provide reports to programmes on the nature and type of these enquiries, with a view to encouraging better provision of information that audiences are requesting.

We hope you find this information useful.

Thanks again for contacting the BBC.

Sorry. :(  Apparently, they\'ve cottoned on to the fact that the direct access link to R4x (which was great!) was still working and have now changed to the other ( very unhelpful) general site.

I have to remember to change that in the \"Help\" forum...

Better late than never, I hope, but the opening music to \"Strangers and Brothers\" is the second movement (Andante Quieto) of Gerald Finzi\'s Cello Concerto Op. 40, a complete recording of which may be found here:
