David Copperfield
« on: February 09, 2012, 11:23:56 AM »
Regular readers may be surprised that I am mentioning a reading of Dickens but the clue is in the identity of the narrator.

He kept me engrossed for 36 hours even during the passages when I know with another reader I would be willing Dickens to get on with it.  I even found myself laughing out loud at Betsey Trotwood and Wilkins Micawber (great characterisation and comic timing) and the pathos is beautifully understated.  All this and that wonderful voice.

I like that about Rufus Sewell reading Doctor Syn. His women characters crack me up. :)

Yes Rufus Sewell is very funny playing the older ladies!  Men can do women\'s voices better than women can do men\'s voices, I find.

They\'re funnier, anyway. :)

Martin Jarvis is pretty good too.

Hmm, Martin Jarvis is not to my taste.  He is accomplished but he sounds a bit self-satisfied somehow.

He doesn\'t do it for me one way or the other, but I do love his female characters.
