Childhoods End
« on: November 10, 2011, 08:02:52 PM »
I have just finished reading Arthur C Clarke\'s \"Childhoods End\".  For me, not the best of his works but reasonably thought provoking. Anybody know if its ever been adapted for radio?

There was one line in it that brought memories of my maternal grandmother flooding back......their common definition of a seven year old boy:

\"Noise surrounded by dirt\"

Apparently, it was on R4 in 1997. Here is Wiki\'s take on it; it implies that many people thought it better than you do. Each to their own,eh?

As a mother of two boys, I can honestly say this is a fair assessment. :)

Thanks for that Ivor. I didn\'t mean to imply it was poor; just that (for me) he has written better.

Wonder why its never been repeated on 7/4X.....some sort of rights problem again I expect:(

Invest a tenner or so in the collection The Collected Stories by Arthur C Clarke, which collects all of his short stories and novellas, and you\'ll find Guardian Angel, which was the original tale that was expanded into Childhood\'s End.

In the bag that I take with me when I attend Hospital Out-Patient appointments, I have a copy of Arthur C Clarke\'s \'Reach For Tomorrow\'. Short stories are ideal for that sort of thing, as you don\'t lose too much, if interrupted. There is a story there that I have often felt should appear in the 7th Dimension as a reading. The title is \'Time\'s Arrow\' and it takes up 17 paperback pages. I won\'t give the  game away, in case some of you have access to the stories and would like to read it yourselves.

The title has also been used by others including Martin Amis and the Star Trek writers - not necessarily the same story, Be careful if you Google it, there are spoilers out there!

You should suggest that one as a possible reading for R4x, Ive.
