A duffer\'s quick guide to get_iplayer
« on: February 16, 2010, 04:30:22 PM »
The duffer, of course, is me, not you

With the demise of the RA links I came across this board and at the same time get_iplayer.
WTF!! where\'s the user friendly interface? Help!!
But I\'ve had a quick look and at this stage I can already download my faves in mp3. So here\'s a very basic howto.

As you will notice it\'s all command driven. But the good news is that you can get it going with just a few of them and come back to learn more later.
First you need to know what\'s available. My example is for BBC7 as that\'s the one I use most but you\'ll get the idea.
I\'ve assumed that you\'ve installed it to the default c:\\program files\\get_iplayer

Create a batch file (in notepad?) which I\'ve imaginatively called BBC7.bat

C:
cd \"\\Program Files\\get_iplayer\\\"
get_iplayer --type=radio --channel=\"BBC 7\" --long > \"C:\\Documents and Settings\\%username%\\Desktop\\BBC7.txt\"

Of course you can just type the above into a command window if you don\'t want to create a batch file.
This will create a text file on your desktop giving you a list of programs available. Open it in Notepad and take a look. Not unlike Beebotron really is it? (:P)

Here\'s an example from the text file:

Matches:
10013:   4 at the Store: Series 2 - Episode 1, BBC 7, Comedy,Radio,Standup, 1 days 21 hours ago - With host Simon Bligh, Alan Carr, Richard Morton and Gina Yashere. From January 2002.

The important bit is the number 10013.

Now you\'re ready to download it.

Open a command window and type the following:

c:
cd \"\\program files\\get_iplayer\"
get_iplayer --get 10013

Now, as if by magic, your chosen program will appear in your assigned iPlayer download folder. Voila!

OK this is all pretty inelegant but it works. It shows the potential and encourages me to go back and try to do it more efficiently. As for the PVR, well I\'ll get to that later I expect.

Aagghh!! Just when I thought I had it all figured out it stopped working.
Downloaded the latest version of get_iplayer today and it\'s off again.
Looks like the moral is to keep it regularly updated.

Hi Ralph

Have you seen this thread?
http://beebotron.org/phorum/read.php?21,7493,7493#msg-7493

It\'s worth a go, and gives you that nice gui you were after.

If you\'re feeling really masochistic, then the other thing you may not have come across is the get_iplayer helper wot I writ. Hover your mouse over the \'Jump to forum\' thingy north-east on this page, just above the search box and then click the Helper - Get_iplayer link. Confused? You will be after you try that one! Click all the question-mark help stuff - it\'s written for Windows and as far as I know still works (I haven\'t used Windows for a while).

Cheers, K

At least they\'ll know where to go, next time the Beeb staff cock up their files. ;)

Hi all,

I\'m a bit late to the party here, but this post ranks highly for a get_iplayer guide. I\'ve just written a complete beginners guide to get_iplayer, complete with installation guides for Mac, Windows and Linux, plus many many examples of commands to copy and paste, from simple downlaods of on programme to setting up the PVR.

Hopefully it\'ll help some people looking to get started with get_iplayer. The guide is here:

Josh

PS - No ads on my site or anything like that, I just love get_iplayer and wanted to help others use it!

Excellent start, SP!

I worked with Phil L. on the original get iPlayer and I haven\'t really played about with it since he decided not to mess with Auntie any more. Just playing around on (x)ubuntu with your stuff - but I\'m hiccuping on Radio 4 Extra Fahrenheit 451.

The link is here (from BBC iPlayer and from within the UK): http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00vs0f0

It\'ll be extant for 5 days 18 hours from now, 2118 on Monday 8 April.

How would I download this from get iPlayer?

Cheers, K

Oh, that looks great!  get_iPlayer won\'t work on my machine. I\'ve tried many times. But I know there are folks out there who\'d have liked to try it but felt a little intimidated. I think this will help. :)

Just to answer my own post on how to download Fahrenheit 451 - - I had a ropey install. After a more sensible installation, lo:

Code: [Select]
~$ get-iplayer --type radio | grep 451
10451: BBC News - 04/04/2013, BBC World Service, News,Radio
11451: Jo Davies - 07/04/2013, BBC Nottingham, Music,Radio
12274: Ray Bradbury - Fahrenheit 451 - -, BBC Radio 4 Extra, Drama,Radio,SciFi & Fantasy
12451: Sean Coyle - 03/04/2013, BBC Radio Foyle, Entertainment,Northern Ireland,Phone-ins,Radio
