Title: Time to move house
Post by: ricklous on August 13, 2016, 03:22:30 PM
Hi folks,

Over the next month I\'ll be looking for a new home for the beebotron.

The traffic to the site has dropped off a cliff recently, as has the forum chatter. Also its a long time since the donations came close to covering the running costs. I havnt had the time to enhance the link pages and as my wifes maternity leave is about to end that\'s unlikely to change soon, so its time to cut our cloth appropriately. I hope at some point I\'ll be able to push things forward again.

At the very least, I\'ll be moving the whole site to a \'shared hosting\' package at a new provider so that I can shut down the server the beebotron currently runs on. If that\'s Mumbo-Jumbo, its the internet equivalent of selling your detached house to move into a student house share.

The costs will go from 16 a month to around 35 for a whole year, hopefully. The move will give me time to consider what to do with the beebotron when I have more free time too. If no one finds the beebotron useful it may be time to call it quits...but we will see!

So, as part of this whole process, I wondered if people could tell me what they use the beebotron for? Do you only stick around for the forum or mostly use the links etc. Any thing you wish it did which it does do at the moment?

Sad but perhaps inevitable Rick, especially after all the hard work you\'ve put into it.
I resort chiefly to the Beebotron for the forum ... and as you point out, traffic there seems to have dropped off a cliff.

I\'ll feel like a snail without a shell* without it ...

*is that a slug?(:D

yeah...not a good sign is it.

Could you do me a favour? One of the cheap hosts I\'m looking at is based in Holland and i need to know if a non-uk location affects the data feeds from the BBC.

This is one of the URLs that the Beebotron uses:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/aod/availability/fivelive.xml

Could you click it, save the result and email it to me please?
In firefox, either click the link or copy/paste it into the address bar. It\'ll open up a long stream of text. Right-click and Save As anywhere on that page and save the file as an \'xml\' ffile, then email the file to me.
I can compare that file with what i get in the UK and decide if the cheap host is an option.

Cheers(tu)

I did type a post yesterday, but somehow during my messing around with the Olympics news and other things, it got lost.

Anyway, the important part of that post was to answer Rick\'s question.

My usage of the Beebotron is as follows:

Links - ca 5%
Phorum - ca 95%

I also commented that I would have made a donation but I don\'t like financial transactions on the net. If there was a way to send in some dosh via a cheque, that would be preferable to me.

Oh, additionally could the dictionary be changed to English English as opposed to the American variety? Then, the spelling of words like cheque shouldn\'t be queried.

Hey, Rick. Sorry to hear things have slowed down so badly. :(

But I do understand the need to adjust.

As for me, I still listen everyday, and use Beebotron links almost exclusively.....soooo much easier to find what I want.  Although I haven\'t contributed much on here for awhile, I do check in.

I\'ve had a steaming pile of life to deal with for quite awhile and not much of interest to talk about....unless you\'d all like to hear about my asthma and gallstones. :)

As for bells and whistles, the only thing I ever wanted was the ability to create playlists in iPlayer, but I don\'t think that could be a Beebotron thing.....could it? Anyhoo, everything else is working great for me. I use the Drama, Factual, Radio 4 pages mostly, but check Radio 2, Radio 3 and Radio 6 pages too, sometimes.

Dramas have been so abysmal. I\'m usually listening to documentaries and have even resorted to listening to Farming Today. :P

Anyhoo, that\'s my two drachmas, for what they\'re worth. Hope everyone is well. :)

Rick I\'ll check tonight and tomorrow and post back here.
Also sending dosh.

Jan: got the two mails which cancelled out need for action.
Good to hear news even if a bit tempered by stones and asthma.
Would be great to be able to hang on to Beebotron ... naturellement!

Sorry if this is short, but medical urgency (sun for vitamin d doses) takes all priority today and tomorrow, winter/autumn back on menu Thursday. Jan made me die laughing on Farming today!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Brexit has had me tuning in to R4 news (yeurch x one gazillion) of late. At least that occupies some listening time ... though I dunno how long I can take it! ::o

Rick you are a HERO!

Hugs from Brussels-on-brexit ........ :D

Thank you, I\'ll PM you with my address etc.

That can already be done - If you click \'Control Centre\', next to the logout link, and from there, the left-hand block has an \'Options\' section. Click \'Forum Settings\' and the bunch of options that appear has a \'Language\' drop-down. Setting the language there sets the correct dictionary for when you\'re posting, etc.

Yeah, could be...but somthing for the future. I don\'t see myself having time to do any development work for the next six months. It\'s a good idea though!

Thats really the sort of thing that I\'d like to build in, it\'d be nice to get to the point where the Beebotron caters for all those who struggle with the \'proper\' iplayer interface, and it has all the navigation and bookmarking facilities without all the shiny bling-bling the BBC likes to use.

Wether we ever get there is another matter! Nice to have something to aim for though :)

It sounds like Tru has much more important priorities to concentrate on...would anyone else be able to produce the file I described further up the thread? You just need to be non-UK based, preferably in Europe, as thats where the potential new service is.

Then the dictionary is at fault, as I have English (British) selected as my chosen language, and cheque still gets a red underline, when typed in.

Could you check if this is just the phorum and not input boxes on other sites too?

I thought I would check (ha, ha) on ten dictionary sites, a couple of thesaurus sites and a few search engines, and none of them had any issue with the word cheque.

I didn\'t look at any Czech Republic sites though. B)

I haven\'t used either in a long time. The proprietary iplayer has broken listen again for my hardware and OS. Listen live still works, but advance lists of upcoming programs are long past and all the hassle and time needed to find programs now is no longer worth it. So all I listen to is a selection of podcasts and I don\'t need or use the Beebotron for those. Sadly German radio has gone down the same drain, but they still managed to triple the licensing fee. (Radio alone was never free as in Britain, but now they have also abolished the two rates and everyone is made to pay the full TV rate without in my case ever having owned one or ever watched their programs. It\'s a poll tax pure and simple, which is illegal, but not apparently, as long as the don\'t call it so.)

If no European listeners are able, Rick, let me know and I\'ll try it from here....be better than nothin\' :)

As for the playlist.....omg! I never even thought it possible, and the thought of it sometime in the future fills me with absolute joy!

I honestly think radio is on the verge of rediscovery. It\'s really perfect for the computer age, I just don\'t think people, the younger crowd especially, are aware of it quite yet. It\'d be ashame if it went the way of the Dodo before the cottoned on.

It is, and always has been, a pain to stop what you are doing, switch to another tab or window, try to remember or find your next program, set it up to play.....then try and remember where you were originally on the previous task.

That\'s why I loved Total Recorder so much. I could set up what I wanted to listen to that day and let her go....

Something to dream about anyway. :)

Tru, you feel about Winter like I do about Summer.....not a welcome change in my world. Hope the D helps. :)  I\'ll try and send a good catch-up e--mail soon. Life is still steaming....but not quite with such fervor.....at the moment, anyway.

And you laugh at Farming Today...but I kid you not.....as I am typing this they are discussing growing Hops in Scotland and African farming. :P

Desperate doesn\'t even cover it.

Heard about those forest fires in Cali last night on tv. Guessed that\'d be pretty bad news if it was your way.
WHAT a world we are living in ... and to think MAN is the cause of it all. Makes ya shudder ...

Yes! The fires are bad...but not as bad as they have been in the past or still could be this season. We have a nasty beetle that has infected our forests and is killing the trees at an alarming rate. That, on top of the drought has left them a virtual tinderbox waiting for the least little spark.

Currently, there is a fire south of here that is doing me no good at all. I just have to stay inside.  Anyhoo, don\'t want to commandeer the thread. I\'ll write you with an update soon.

I\'ll be starting the move soon...so there\'s the potential for blackouts in the coming weeks. Hopefuly I\'ll manage to do things fairly smoothly though.

I thought you all might like a \'good news\' post. Here\'s the reason I have no time to develop/maintain the Beebotron at the mo:

And not to be left out, heres Roz, my chief liutenant

Beautiful piccies Rick - so pleased for you & Claire! It\'s been a real delight knowing, and meeting you and your family.

You\'ve had my views in an email - but to condense it for others, whatever you want is good for me!

I thank you so much for helping me - this site started with me trying to expand the open source ethos to a free ethic for, in those days, access to BBC Listen Again on things (pocket PCs, early tablets etc) that wouldn\'t work with the BBC site.

Oh, how things have changed since those days!
Who know what the future holds?
But there will always be a place for people like Rick, who are willing to make the effort.

Perhaps the Beebotron has already made a small improvement....

Ages ago, when the Beebotron was embryonic, I had an email from the then head of Future Media in the BBC, asking whether he could give me a ring and have a chat.

Course we could, and we did. Surprised me, the Beeb didn\'t moan - they were quite supportive.

Actually, they weren\'t that supportive - there was no funding, no help and nothing else - but at least they didn\'t threaten the Beebotron with a takedown notice or anything like that.

Best for the future, make sure it\'s there, I\'ll be lurking (as always) K

Dear Rick

I use your links.  I love your links.
And when I couldn\'t get your links to work I would look up to see if there were interesting programmes and then try and work out a way to listen to them.

But I don\'t often read the forum.  I really only consult it when I\'m having problems. Could this be the same for other users of your links and the reason for not many responses?  I have the Radio 4 HLS list favourited in my browser and just go straight there so if it hadn\'t been for \"Just a minute\" cutting out after 4 minutes I would never have read your announcement.

Thank you for all your hard work and for this really useful site.  Podcasts just aren\'t the same because you can\'t get everything that way and the BBC\'s own page is a nightmare to navigate and get working on all the different (mostly old) hardware I have.

I\'m going to see if I can donate.

Thank you again

Jill

Sorry to hear that the use of Beebotron is dropping off. I still use the links (both live and listen again) to provide simpler access than regular iPlayer - especially good for listen again.
Although not a regular contributor, I follow the forums and take comfort in the wit and wisdom of Beeb fans around the world.
I hope you can find a way to keep the site running.

Sorry for the delay in responding. At first, I was doing Ivor things. Then I lost my login. By reading my old emails, I found out that I had saved a note of my password and \'merely\' had to find it!

As is shown by my non-participation in Facebook and Twitter, I only post when I\'ve something to say or wish to make some smart comment about the comments of others. Apart from reading all new messages, my main connection is with Andrew Slater\'s excellent Listing links. I used to enjoy adding programmes to the Calendar which helps me to remember them. Even without that, I have not missed the recent re-airing of Journey into Space, Wimsey\'s: Have His Carcase and Falco: The Silver Pigs.
